HISTORIC FAIRFIELD

SOUTHPORT \ CONNECTICUT

This project presented a unique opportunity to restore and enhance the landscape and gardens of a historically significant site. The design carefully balanced the needs of a large, active family with a deep respect for the property’s legacy and cultural context. The original house in Southport CT, built by Cornelius Hull in 1750, was a smaller saltbox dwelling, and circa 1930, a new house was built in the Georgian Revival Style. This house was modelled after the Ford Mansion, General Washington’s Morristown, NJ Headquarters.

As with many historic homes, the original portion of the house sits close to the road and was added to during the current ownership. As the owner began a sensitive renovation to update the house and pool house, the challenge for the design team was to oversee a new landscape and herald in a new era of the property’s long history.

The property today is comprised of approximately 4.5 acres and overall, the landscape design evolves from formalized and structured plantings to an open landscape that honors the history of the site.
